Cole carried his easel and the political winds of a young nation at his back. Hitchcock, his faith and an unbridled love of the natural world. The Kalapuyan people, their tradition and migratory pathways. Each defined truth from where they stood, with the instruments they'd inherited, measuring a world beyond the capacity they could fully hold. What I've come to understand—tracing their paths upstream through the window of the plane, past the banks of the Willamette, to the green auditorium chair that swung squeaking as I stood to leave the lecture hall that morning—is that every record is also a position. The painting, the geological survey, the essay—each one a particular ruler laid against an infinite coastline.- A two-hour drive from where Hitchcock once stood, and three from where Cole's painting hangs in a hushed white cube conferring its importance—the tires of the green, red, and white mountain bike still hum along the pavement below me.
